What is a Certified Medication Aide?
A Certified Medication Aide (CMA) is a professional caregiver who is licensed to administer medications under the supervision of a Registered Nurse in an Assisted Living Facility or Residential Home Setting. If you are a Certified Home Health Aide (CHHA) or Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) with an active NJ license looking to further their career in the health industry and be able to administer medication then becoming a Certified Medication Aide is for you.
In New Jersey caregivers have different certifications depending on what level of care they will be providing and whether or not they will be administering medications. Caregivers who already possess an active New Jersey CHHA or CNA license can further their career by becoming a Certified Medication Aide. CMA’s are licensed to administer medications within an Assisted Living Facility or Residential Home Setting under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. As a CMA your medication administration duties will be done on shifts separate from other caregiving duties. Applicants must be able to pass a mandatory standardized entrance exam prior to acceptance into the course. This exam tests the ability to satisfactorily read, write and comprehend English as well as demonstrate basic arithmetic skills. Certified Medication Aide Classes are taught by Registered Nurse Instructors and Pharmacists and consist of: 48 Hours classroom instruction including daily practice quizzes and tests to help students gauge their understanding of the material. 3 Skills Evaluations commonly referred to as Med Passes. All Med Passes take place within a partnering facility under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Standardized final given by the State of NJ in conjunction with the testing company PSI Services. Please Note: All applicants must have an active New Jersey CHHA or CNA license. If you do not currently hold an active New Jersey CHHA or CNA license but would like to begin your journey in caregiving please check out our CHHA classes HERE.
